Fencing Calculator - Fencing & Panel Planner - Alsford

Choosing the right fence panels is the easy part. There are so many options to choose from and you should have no trouble in finding a style that suits your property. Choose from standard lap panels to featheredge or close board panels. If you have a little more to spend you can opt for decorative panels. There is a wide range to choose from.

You will then need to choose what type of posts you want to install – Timber or Concrete.

Timber posts are most common, are more pleasing to look at and are easier to install. If you choose an imported HC4 Treated Post, these will be a little more expensive but you can expect this to last 10-15 years.  Concrete posts are expensive but will last much longer. They are less attractive than timber posts and are more challenging to handle. Furthermore, because of their weight, they will require a longer install time as the post mix will need to be completely dry before you are able to install your fence panels.

You then need to choose your gravel boards. Again, these can be timber or concrete and the same rules apply, depending on which look you want to create and what your budget is.

You might also want to consider a gate. There are plenty to choose from and you should be able to match your panel style and finish.

Once you have an idea of the type of fence you want, the next step is to measure up. You should measure in a straight line along the fenceline you want to create. Once you’ve measured, you can then begin to calculate how many posts and panels you will need.

Most standard panels such as Lap Panels are 6ft (1830mm) whereas most decorative panels are 1.8m wide (1800mm). In addition, you need to allow for the size of post you are going to use – 3 inch (75mm) or for a more robust post, 4 inch (100mm).

You will need to allow for one post for each panel, apart from the first panel which will also need an additional start post. In other words, if you measure 8 panels, you will need a total of 9 posts.

Use the slider to set the fence length you require, select panel and post width and the calculator will estimate the number of panels and posts required for your fence.
